Aerodyne Scientist Recognized for Best Paper Award

Fangzhou Guo, a senior scientist at Aerodyne Research, received a 2022 Best Paper Award from Environmental Science & Technology Letters (https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.estlett.3c00667). Each year, the ES&T Letters editorial advisory board members and the editorial team nominate awardees from the manuscripts published. The 2022 winners were announced in October, 2023.

Fangzhou co-authored a paper titled “Revealing Drivers of Haze Pollution by Explainable Machine Learning.” The paper explored the causes of severe haze episodes in northern China prior to and during the COVID-19 shutdown. The team of researchers used both data-driven models and machine learning to identify the part emissions, meteorological factors and chemistry played in the formation of these haze events. Their findings spotlight the contributions AI, specifically machine learning, may play in future air pollution studies.
